United legend Bobby Charlton

Bobby Charlton is an English professional footballer who played as an attacking midfielder, left winger or centre forward, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. He was a member of the England team that won the 1996 FIFA World Cup and won the Ballon d'Or. He also finished second in the Ballon d'Or voting in 1996 and 1998.

He played almost his entire club career at Manchester United, where he was renowned for his individual passing, powerful shots and ability to finish with both feet. He is one of only nine players to have won the FIFA World Cup, the European Cup and the Ballon d'Or, in addition to his success at club and international level.

Bobby Charlton was born in Ashton, Northumberland, on 1956, He made his debut for Manchester United at the age of 18. He soon became a regular starter for the club and won the 1957 FA Cup (the English domestic cup before it was renamed the Premier League). He was the last survivor of United's Munich disaster, having been saved by teammate Harry Gregg.

After leading United to the FA Cup in 1963 and the League Cup in 1965 and 1967, he captained the team to the 1968 European Cup final, scoring twice in the final, helping them become the first English club to win a European trophy. In 1973–74, he left United to become player-manager of Preston North End. He later accepted a directorship at Wigan Athletic and in 1984 became a board member of Manchester United.

As an international, Bobby Charlton represented England at four World Cups (1958, 1962, 1966, 1970), but was initially not given a chance to play. By the time he retired from England in 1970, he had become the record holder for the most caps with 106, a record that was later surpassed by Bobby Morey in 1973. He was the record holder for most goals and appearances for Manchester United and England for many years, surpassing Ryan Giggs's tally of 758 after playing in the Champions League final in 2008. His 40-year-old record of 249 goals was broken by Wayne Rooney in 2017. In addition to these records, he also holds the record for the highest number of goals scored by an England player with 49, a record that was broken by Rooney in 2015 and Harry Kane in 2022, making him England's third-highest scorer.

Manchester United manager Matt Bidby said: "There has never been a more famous footballer. He is a complete player." England manager Alf Ramsey said: "He is one of the greatest players I have ever seen and he is a favourite of the 1966 team. I knew from the start that he would have a place in the team because of his qualities. He is not just a goal scorer, he is also a player who works hard with his team-mates.

In the past, whenever I watched United games, I would always see Bobby Charlton in the special section. He was an invaluable figure to United, as much as he was to the club. He is someone who will always be mentioned when talking about United. He passed away a long time ago, on 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑, October 𝟐𝟏, at the age of 𝟖𝟔.
